Here is what everyone wants to know: What is the Cost?
$300 for a class program, plus travel expenses*(up to one presentation and one class room Q&A visit)
$600 for a full school assembly, plus travel expenses*(up to 4hr, usually two assemblies and two individual class Q&A visits)
I do offer a full day for $1000 plus travel expenses*.( full day at school with two-three assemblys and as many class rooms as possible,
this really is the best value)
*Travel expenses include fuel, ferry, and if applicable, plane ticket. We try to schedule as many presentations as possible within the same geographical area to greatly reduce travel expenses.
Laura’s goal is to reach as many students as possible.
Do you require a deposit or pre-payment?
Payment the day of the assembly is all we require.
How long is an assembly or presentation?
Each presentation is 45 minutes to 1.5hr. long depending on age and time allowed.
What age groups are good for a school assembly?
If it is a full school if is best to divide the grades up a bit so all the students are able to learn at their own level! The very best divide is K-3, 4-6, 7-8 grades! But we can make anything work.
Do you have visual aids? Yes. I bring a dogsled that I use on the trail. I also bring a lot of mushng gear and some of the arctic clothing that I wear to deal with the cold. The students also get to see the gear the dogs need to pull the sled. There is always something to look at.
Do you bring a dog?
YES! I bring one of the dogs to every presentation.
What do you need to set up for a Presentation or Assembly?
It takes me about half an hour to set up and take down. I need only a small area to set up. I need a screen or some sort of projection surface for the DVD as well as an area that can be darkened for the DVD at the end of the program. If you absolutely do not have a room that can be darkened it is OK! It just means I can talk about dog sledding a little longer and field a few more questions. If the group is large enough or acoustics are not very good I need a PA system.
How long have you been speaking about dog sledding? I have been interested in dog sledding since I was 10years old. I started doing school visits when I was 14 years old. At this time I have done over 100 presentations on dog sledding and the Iditarod!
Thanks for coming to Adams and sharing with us. Everyone was so excited to meet you. After following you in the Iditarod, it was fun to see you, all your gear, sled and dogs in real life. It was very meaningful to actually see, touch and try on items that were an important part of your journey.
The class also appreciated your talking about yourself and some of the things that have been difficult for you to deal with. Kids can always relate to someone who has difficulty with school work and reading. They appreciated hearing you talk about getting motivated to complete a task or goal. I really liked your referring to it as your mountain and how problems everyone faces are their mountains. Several of my students related how completing the WASL was their mountain, but how proud they were that they managed to successfully climb that mountain!
We all wish you well. Take care of yourself in the off-season. Everyone says “Hi” to Bella and Petunia. We look forward to seeing you next year.
Sincerely,
Cathy Alward

Thank you so much for coming to Brighton School & the Edmonds Library yesterday! My 2nd grade daughter, Haley, really enjoyed learning about your life as a sled dog trainer and racer. Thank you for being a positive role-model on team work, committment & passion, and good sportsmanship! Tracy
Dear Laura,
Thank you for the wonderful assembly Monday. My first graders loved it! Today we were on the bus coming back to school and I was sitting with the girls listening to them talk. They were setting up the game they were going to play at recess. They were going to be husky dogs. They were deciding which dog would lead the sled and who would ride in the sled. They went over the terminology they would use like "wooo" and "straight ahead" and other phrases you had told them that I cannot even remember. It was so endearing but also amazing that they remembered so much of what you had taught them. It is a compliment when they put what they have learned into their play. Thank you again. We very much enjoyed your talk and as you can see it meant a lot to us. First Grade Teacher, Brighton School
