I’d like to introduce you to an amazing woman. Her name is Laura Daugereau and she is a long distance dog sled driver. Yes, a dog-musher. In 2008 she became the first woman from Washington State to compete in and finish the Iditarod Sled Dog Race. Finishing this 1049 mile race from Anchorage to Nome had been her dream and passion from the time she was 10 years old and after 15 years of hard work and dedication to her dogs she finally made it there on March 15, 2008 with her team of 12 Alaskan Huskies still wagging tails and ready for more.
When Laura visits a school she gives the kids and the staff a chance to step out of their daily routine and imagine what it must be like to achieve the impossible. She brings a strong message to everyone that if you really focus on your goal and then take it “one little training run at a time” you can accomplish just about anything. Laura struggles with severe dyslexia herself and often talks about how daunting schoolwork was for her, and yet she persevered and pulled off straight A’s.
I have been to several schools with Laura and heard her comparing overcoming the challenges of dyslexia to overcoming the trials she faced on the Iditarod trail. Trials like climbing over the great Alaskan Mountain range and crossing the frozen Bering Sea listening to the haunting sounds of ice cracking under her sled as she trusted her dogs to get her to the distant shore through a white-out so severe she could not even tell they were moving except by looking down at her sled runners and feeling the ice rush past her feet. The kids and the staff are equally spellbound by her stories.
Laura’s message is simple. “Facing your mountains” is what she calls it, and I can attest that she is really an inspiration to the schools and communities she has been able to reach. She has a calm and purposeful manner, a wonderful message and a thousand and one incredible stories to captivate and motivate your audience.
I hope you will have the good fortune of being able to cross paths with this amazing woman. She is a true transformer and your school and community will thank you for inviting in Laura to share her story with them.
Sincerely, A

"I know I am putting myself out there as a roll model. When I am talking to students about finding their passion and climbing every mountain on the trail of that passion, we connect. Because I am doing what I love to do, I am doing what I am talking about, I am living my passion! Pick any age student you like and they see someone walking the talk!"- Laura

Learn about the challenges and the triumphs of teaming up with 16 of your best friends and running the Iditarod!
Learn how you can overcome great difficulties with hard work and diligence. Laura openly talkes about her struggles with dyslexia but with hard work she achieved the goal of a 4.0 GPA upon graduation.
Do you require a deposit or pre-payment?
Payment the day of the assembly is all we require.
How long is an assembly or presentation?
Each presentation is 45 minutes to 1.5hr. long depending on age and time allowed. 15-20 minutes per Class is a great time for grade appropriate questions and a chance to pet the 4 legged athlete!
What age groups are good for a school assembly?
If it is a full school if is best to divide the grades up a bit so all the students are able to learn at their own level! The very best divide is K-3, 4-6, 7-8, 9-12 grades! But we can make anything work.
Do you have visual aids?
Yes. I bring a dogsled that I use on the trail.( unless I fly to your school) I also bring a lot of mushng gear and some of the arctic clothing that I wear to deal with the cold. The students also get to see the gear the dogs need to pull the sled. There is always something to look at.
Do you bring a dog?
YES! I bring one of the dogs to every presentation.
What do you need to set up for a Presentation or Assembly?
It takes me about half an hour to set up and take down. I need only a small area to set up. I need a screen or some sort of projection surface for the DVD as well as an area that can be darkened for the DVD at the end of the program. If you absolutely do not have a room that can be darkened it is OK! It just means I can talk about dog sledding a little longer and field a few more questions. If the group is large enough or acoustics are not very good I need a PA system.
