Running the Iditarod is not a cheap endeavor. I have provided a list of some of the basic expenses involved. There are many other expenses that are not included in this list. The Iditarod may last only 9-15 days, but training starts in September. This means that for seven months all of my time is devoted to working with the dogs without a monthly income, however, not without the cost of living. The long hours of summer are already devoted to putting up enough dough to get through the winter months.  The extra costs of Iditarod are on top of the already paper thin budget. Here is just a quick overview:
